Some Ways Counseling Can Help You
1. You’ll set better goals for yourself, and have more success accomplishing them.
* I don’t know about you, but I missed the class on goal setting. So instead,
we go through life unfocused and responding to each new crisis.
* Learning to set achievable goals, that reflect your values, will add focus and
purpose to your life. Then you can plan and act, not just react.
* Telling another person your goals adds someone to coach, encourage, and
to hold you accountable.
2. You’ll have someone “outside the loop” to discuss your obstacles and hopes with.
* Family and friends may be too close to the forest to see the trees.
* Counselors are trained to help you understand your obstacles an know
how to effectively and efficiently facilitate change. We are trained to help you
find solutions that fit for you.
* Counselors are bound by confidentiality laws; we won’t tell anyone about
your obstacles without your specific written permission.
3. You’ll have more ideas to try on for size.
* One definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over and
expecting a different result”.
* Your Counselor acts as a resource for you, to find something new that
will remove your obstacles. We give you different perspectives to consider
and new actions to try out.
4. Therapy Works!
* Outcome studies show that counseling is effective in removing obstacles in
your life, and increasing your satisfaction with life.
* People with clinical depression are more prone to heart problems, and for
those with chronic illnesses, depression is an obstacle to taking care of
yourself.
5. Your children will talk to me (and listen!).
* Most parents who bring their children to see me, tell me that they’ll
never talk to me. They almost always will talk to me. They also may not listen to their parents, but will likely listen to me.
* They’ll be more likely to communicate with you.
6. You’ll have a safe place to work on improving your marriage.
* On your own, your discussions have likely resulted in arguing and/or the
silent treatment.
* With a Counselor acting as a mediator and coach, you can more effectively work on improving your relationship.
* You will be encouraged to try on new ideas and behaviors to help you save a precious thing, your marriage (I’m much less expensive than a divorce, and your children will thank you.)
